The nurse anticipates that Guaifenesin (Mucinex) will be ordered to aid in the removal of mucus. Tracheostomy is an operative procedure that creates a surgical airway in the cervical trachea. It is most performed in patients who have had difficulty weaning off a ventilator, followed by those who have suffered trauma or a catastophic neurologic insult. Mucinex helps to reduce chest congestion caused by colds, infections, or allergies. It works by thinning the mucus in the air passages.
