they bought it from the spanish but the spanish didn't want to give it up at first so the spanish american war started and it wasn't till the americans fought their way all the way to the heart of mexico (mexico city) and bought it from them but it wasn't really a choice it was to end the war and so the americans forced the spaniards to sell to them
