Final answer:

After the peace conference in Geneva, Vietnam was divided into North and South Vietnam.

Step-by-step explanation:

After Vietnam was divided at the peace conference in Geneva, it was split into two separate nations: North Vietnam, officially known as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and South Vietnam, officially known as the Republic of Vietnam. This division was temporary and intended to last for two years until national elections could be held to reunify the country. However, the elections were ultimately canceled, and the division between North and South Vietnam persisted.

The US supported the Bao Dai regime in South Vietnam. This, and later support of the Ngo Dinh Diem Regime, would be what  dragged us into the Vietnam Conflict. The Vietminh in the North, with the backing of China and the USSR, had hoped to regain control of the South and spread Communism. Our support of the South along with mission to contain, or eliminate, the Communism meant we could not walk away and had to help.
