What impact did the rise of Christianity have on the intellectual life of Europe, both eastern and western, through the seventh century C.E.?

A very negative one. People of non-christian faith were often persecuted and labeled as outcasts. And it put a major half on scientific research. Scientists who came up with theorys that went against christian belief were often in-prisoned.
