|y| is the absolute value of y.

Absolute value is the number of units from 0 on a number line.


|-5| = 5

|5| = 5


y = 5

There are two answers: y = 5 or y = -5

Those two values are exactly five units away from zero on the number line, which is why |5| = 5 and |-5| = 5
