The running of the bulls is a Spanish tradition in which people try to outrun a herd of charging bulls and make it safely to their pens without being overrun. Discuss the runner’s response to this situation by explaining the activities that are regulated by each division of the autonomic nervous system.

The sympathetic nervous system begins the fight or flight response. The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for vigorous muscular activity. The sympathetic nervous system increases the runner’s heart rate and blood pressure, inhibits digestion, and stimulates sweating. Once the event is over, the parasympathetic nervous system returns the body back to normal.
