3. Janet is flying a kite on a string that is 75m long. The kite is 62m above the ground. Estimate the distance between Janet and the spot on the ground directly beneath the kite.

Hey there! :D

For this, you will need to draw your own diagram, but I think you can do this if I explain it. It should look like a triangle. Where the string is a vertex, and the kite is an upper vertex. The bottom is the distance. Look at the example. You can label the distances on it if you want to.

c= length of the string (75m)

b= height of the kite (62m)

a will equal the distance between Janet and the spot on the ground beneath the kite.

Now, we plug it into the Pythagorean theorem.

a^2+b^2= c^2

a^2+ 62^2= 75^2

Square the numbers.

a^2+3844= 5625

Subtract 3844 on both sides.

a^2= 1781

Find the square root.

√1781= 42.2 or 42.
