Ms. Jones had a roll of plastic that was 8 2/3 feet long. She cut off a piece that was feet 6 1/2 long. How much plastic was left on the roll?

A student solved the problem this way:

8 2/3 - 6 1/2 = 8 4/6 - 6 3/6= 2 1/6

There was 2 1/6 feet of plastic left on a roll
