Read the excerpt from Judith Ortiz Cofer’s poem “El Olvido.” a bare, cold room with no pictures on the walls, a forgetting place where she fears you will die of loneliness and exposure. Jesús, María, y José, she says, el olvido is a dangerous thing. Which strategy would be most helpful in enhancing the reader’s comprehension of the poem?

One strategy that would help the reader enhance their understanding of the poem would be to identify unknown words. Without knowing the meaning of all the vocabulary in a piece, it is difficult for the reader to get a true understanding of the meaning.

For example, in this poem, "el olvido" refers to oblivion, or obscurity which helps the reader understand that the woman thinks oblivion is a dangerous thing and does not want to be forgotten.
