both of these problems use the Pythagorean Theorem:
a^(2) + b^(2) = c^(2)

where a and b are the legs of the right triangle and c is the hypotenuse of the right triangle..

In problem one, the distance walked by Adam and Jimena represent the two legs of a right triangle... try drawing them..now draw a line segment to finish out the third side of the triangle(or hypotenuse). We want to find the side length of this hypotenuse.

So substitute into the theorem:

3^(2) + 4^(2) = c ^(2)

9+16 = c ^(2)

25 = c ^(2)
5=c

For the second problem, the slide represent our hypotenuse(what we are looking for), and the 10 feet from the base to the ladder, and the height of 7 feet for the ladder represent the legs of our right triangle.. I would encourage you to try and draw the picture and label the dimensions.

Using the theorem: 10²+7²=c² or 149=c² now take the square root of both sides of the equation to find c = approximately 12.2 feet.. (the length of the slide)
