The fertile farmland of Oregon caused people to move west as farmland became scarcer and more expensive. The vast grass lands of Texas encourage ranchers and farmers to settle. The native grasses were a good local food source for cattle. The gold in California meant people could get rich. Even though thousands never made money mining and panning for it. Those that sold the miners the wares, goods, and supplies did make a fortune off of them.
