x = 2, y = 3

Explanation:

x - 3y = - 7 → (1)

x = 5 - y → (2)

Substitute x = 5 - y into (1)

5 - y - 3y = - 7

5 - 4y = - 7 ( subtract 5 from both sides )

- 4y = - 12 ( divide both sides by - 4 )

y = 3

Substitute y = 3 into (2)

x = 5 - 3 = 2

solution is (2, 3 )
