Ratification was stalled by Colombia and President Roosevelt was angry. The US Nashville was sent around the Colombian state of Panama. Its troops bribed the Colombian army and the revolution worked. The Hay Bunau-Varilla Treaty was agreed to which gave the US a 10 mile wide zone and control of the canal "in perpetuity."
Hope this helps! :)
