Is the word tsar capitalized in the middle of a sentence?

the word "tsar" would only be capitalized if it was in front of someone's name, like "king" or "queen". For example:

When to capitalize: Tsar Nicholas ruled in Russia.

When NOT to capitalize: Nicholas II was once tsar of Russia.

It depends.
