What did it mean in economic terms that world war 1 was a total war

WW1 was a total war, because many nations used all of there economies, factories, etc, and put it into the war effort, and usually only produced war material instead of civilian products. Total war means that all resources, population, and anything that can be used for the war, IS USED during the war to help the nation win the war
