Persian Gulf War--this war was a coalition effort led by the US to get Iraq to back down from their invasion of Kuwait. The operation called Desert Storm last under 2 months resulting in Iraq leaving Kuwait but the issues remaining from the war would return in 2003.

Osama bin Laden--this man denounced western influence in the Middle East and wanted Islamic countries to return to Islamic Law. Bin Laden was responsible for the first and second attacks on the World Trade Center as well as all terrorist activity associated with Al-Qaeda.
