What are some similarities between square dance and line dance?

Square dancing is very old. It is almost exclusively done to a fiddle song. It is ALWAYS done with couples. It requires a "caller," someone who calls the parts of the dance.

Line dancing is newer, is done to either a live band or pre-recorded music, does not require a fiddle, does not require partners, and has no caller.

So a couple of differences one, the music, so line dance music is done to commercially played country music on the radio. ... And square dancing is a called dance where the caller tells you what to do. And there is the difference between line dancing and square dancing
