As a Poli Sci student I would say that this is a very basic definition of materialism yes. Why do I agree that this is an accurate definition? Because Materialism is the desire to fulfil your life with items you feel are require to make yourself and life better, which you have stated, although, again, it still remains a very basic definition.

Yes, take for example money, money is a material thing and to most people money brings comfort pleasure etc. Clothes as another thing is a materialism it brings us comfort. These two examples show how these things are matirealism and bring us comfort or pleasure in this work, money being a big part of it.
