The answer is D. Photons are individual units of light. In order for an image to exist, they need to be absorbed by something that can use them to create the picture. In old days, this was Silver Nitrate applied to film, but today it is the digital camera itself that does this. Electrons are something different entirely, so A and B are wrong, and C is wrong because the photons are not ejected by the image sensor.
