When kottak began researching among the betsileo in madagascar, the children ran away from him because he was associated with the schoolteachers, whom no one trusted. he was traveling with his wife, and no one would talk to a woman. they were afraid that he was working with the national government to take away their land. they were afraid that if he took pictures of them, it would capture their souls. they thought he was a vampire?

Based on the scenario above, the main reason as to why Kottak, the researcher, became someone that the people were afraid of as he travelled to their place was because of the sole reason that they thought that Kottak was a vampire, making the children afraid of him.
