Read the opening paragraph from a formal e-mail.

The Nature Center was founded to preserve three hundred acres of woods and wetlands. Our miles of nature trails provide hours of hiking pleasure to our visitors. Our Nature’s Classroom has helped countless children gain an understanding of and appreciation for the importance of nature. Each year, we strive to earn enough donations to maintain this local treasure. This year, in honor of the Nature Center’s fiftieth birthday, our annual fundraiser will be even more elaborate and elegant than usual.

Why can the reader conclude that this e-mail was written for a general audience?

A It contains language that suggests that the general audience is officially connected to the Nature Center.
B. It assumes that the general audience already knows a lot about the Nature Center and its annual fundraiser.
C. It assumes that the general audience is in a position to effect big changes in the Nature Center.
D. It contains background information about the Nature Center that a general audience would need.

D. It contains background information about the Nature Center that a general audience would need.

The opening paragraph tells the audience why the Nature Center was founded and what it has to offer the visitors and community. It then transitions to how the Nature Center is funded and the annual fundraiser. The background information about the purpose of the Nature Center and it's offerings give the necessary information the general audience would need to get interested in supporting the fundraiser. There is no language to suggest the audience is officially connected to the Nature Center. It also does not assume the audience already knows a lot about the Nature Center. The paragraph includes only the basic information a person who was familiar with the Nature Center would already know. It also does not assume the audience can effect big changes. It hope the audience may be interested in participating in the fundraiser, but does assume a big change.
