When we combine in a sentence the imperfect and the past tense, the verbs in the past specify actions at certain times and the verbs in the imperfect describe situations without detailing, which were in progress when the actions in the past occurred.
Examples :
Pretérito => Ayer tuve un mal día.
translation => Yesterday I had a bad day.
Imperfecto => No funcionaba el coche y yo tenía prisa.
translation => The car did not work and I was in a hurry.
Both => Llegué tarde al trabajo porque el coche no funcionaba.
translation => I was late for work because the car did not work.
