Explain why co2 increases in the atmosphere when we burn fossil fuels

With many fossil fuels, such as coal, they contain some form of carbon, and when the fossil fuels are burned, they combine with oxygen to form CO2 (carbon dioxide) which is then released into the atmosphere.
