The figures in Gustave’s paintings were always two-dimensionally flat and were characterized by golden features.

Flimt was famous for these works in his “Golden Period”. Byzantine art was well regarded for its abundant use of gold and flat figures. However, his subject matter is what kept his work separated from traditional Byzantine art.
