You can find the distance between two points on a number line by using the Pythagorean theorem.

The distance formula is based on the Pythagorean Theorem. When you have 2 points the distance is the hypotenuse of a right triangle. So the change in x and the change in y form the legs, thus Pythagorean Theorem can solve for the distance
