The Civil War caused many economic changes in America. The war brought economic challenges to the South. Without the ownership of slaves, plantation owners had to hire and pay workers for harvest; a new system of labor had to be developed to sustain southern agriculture production. Additionally, the cost of the war was a huge debt burden on both the north and the south and high inflation followed. The process of Reconstruction added to the economic challenges. Southern currency became worthless as the federal government (no of a reunited country) did not recognize it as legal tender.
