a rope is sq rt. 250 units long. If cut into 2 pieces so that the lengths of the pieces are in the ratio of 3:2 what is the length of longer piecein simplest radical form? 3:2 =5/3(?) Do i set x/sq.rt.250=5/3? I end up with 25 sq rt. 10/3. This isn't correct.

Let 3x = the length of the first rope

2x = the length of the second rope

This representation is based on the given that the ratio of the two ropes is 3:2.

3x + 2x = sq rt. 250

5x = sq rt. 250

x = sq rt. 250 / 5

x = sq rt. 25(10) / 5

x = 5 sq rt. 10 /5

The five would be cancelled resulting to:

x =sq rt. 10
