B. Mary is forgotten in the chaos.
When Mary's primary caretaker dies of the cholera, her family forget her in their fear. Mary is in her room and stays there until later when she emerges and has some wine that has been left out. Afterward, she falls asleep for a long period of time, and, when she wakes, everyone has either died or fled.
