Cretinism. It is a condition resulting into a stunted physical and mental growth owing to untreated congenital deficiency of thyroid hormone due to the low levels of maternal thyroid hormone during pregnancy. The cause is usually, iodine deficiency. Therefore, iodine is not provided enough in the diet. Iodine is usually found inĀ our foods. Most of its forms are in the ocean where iodide is oxidize to form iodine. In case a newborn is suspected to have cretinism, thyroxine must be given. Frequent monitoring is advised to maintain the patient on a normal thyroid state.
