The speech of Frederick Douglass, "The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro., was meant to demonstrate the hypocrisy of celebrating the Fourth of July when people are enslaved. He did not see any reason why the Black people would celebrate the independence of America from Britain when they (the Black People) themselves were still slaves to America.
