One characteristic of a novel is theme. The theme is what the author is trying to teach the reader through their story. Another characteristic is plot. The plot is the base line of the story, without the plot we wouldn’t have a story.

Plot. Plot is an essential characteristic of all novels. The plot is the story, the reason for writing the novel. The author creates a story that is believable, or at least relatable
to true events, feelings or actions.
