it would take the ferry a total of 5 trips to carry all 14 cars across

The ferry can carry 3 cars at one time
There are 14
3 x 4 = 12 (which is not enough to carry all 14 across)
3 x 5 = 15 (which is more than enough space to carry all 14 across)
So the ferry needs to make
5 trips
in all
