Why did Abraham Lincoln lose the election of 1858

After the debates there were more Pro-Douglas members than Pro-Lincoln members. The winner was determined by the state legislater, and because of the Douglas bias, Douglas won the race instead of Lincoln.

During the Senate race, Republicans did not have sufficient votes in the Illinois Legislature to elect Abraham Lincoln to the US Senate.
