let's say he bought x fancy shirts and y plain shirts
x+y=8→y=8-x
23x+13y=144
23x+13(8-x)=144
23x+104-13x=144
10x=40
x=4
he bought 4 fancy shirts
8-4=4
he bought 4 plain shirts
