An author is paid $500 as an advance on their book plus an additional $4 for every book sold. If the author earns $880, how many books has he or she sold?

x will stand for every extra book sold

880 = 4x + 500
subtract 500 from both sides

380 = 4x
divide both sides by 4

x = 95
they sold 95 books
