The resolution helps show the theme that fate, not free will, controls our destiny. Romeo and Juliet wanted to be together despite their families' feud, but the result was that they both died. We learn in the prologue that Romeo and Juliet's relationship was doomed from the start. Though the characters made decisions that led to the catastrophe, certain events were out of their control. Had Friar John not been quarantined because of the plague, the couple might still be alive. They were pawns of fate, and they were fated to die so that their families would stop feuding.
