Plant leaves sometimes have special adaptations to conserve water in extremely dry conditions. Some species of cactus have evolved with very small leaves. Smaller leaves in a dry environment means that there will be less water loss due to the process of transpiration.

The Aloe Vera plant has thick waxy leaves. The thick leaves store water in the form of sap and so these plants are right at home in arid environments.
