How did the glassmakers design their rose windows for the cathedrals?

Glassmakers used to use plate tracery to make rose windows. In plate tracery simple shapes were enclosed in a round space. The rose windows look like simple shapes that have been punched out of a circular plate. Rose windows are circular stained glass window on the walls and are also called wheel window.
