The tangent of an angle is the ratio of the length of the opposite side to the length of the adjacent side ⇒

tan20° = 9/x
x = 9/tan20°
x = 9/0.364
x = 24.7

tan 20 = opposite side / adjacent side = 9 /x

x * tan20 = 9

x = 9 / tan 20 = 24.7 to nearest tenth. Answer
