X= 6. 6 is the answer, because to find the answer, you can subtract. 40 - 34= 6, hence your answer. Hoped this helped, and you can send me a message if you ever need help with this!

Try doing 40 - 34 first:
40 - 34 = 6
Now try 34 + 6
34 + 6 = 40
X=6
