Let
g----------------> pounds of granola------------> costs $3 per pound
c----------------> pounds of cranberries-------> cost $5.50 per pound

we know that
3g+5.5c=29--------------------------------------------------------->
3g+5.5c=29
and
g+c=8-------->
multiplying by -3 all the expression---------> -3g-3c=-24
------------------------
0g+2.5c=5
2.5c=5---------> c=2
g+c=8----------> g=6

the answer is

The system of equations
3g+5.5c=29
g+c=8

Carlos should buy 2 pounds of cranberries and 6 pounds of granola
