lets BD = x

x/ 3 = 12/x
x^2 = 36
x = 6
so BD = 6

3^2 + 6^2 = 9+36 = 45
AB = √45
AB = 3√5 or AB = 6.71

answer
AB = 3√5 or AB = 6.71
