d = 11/12 mile
stop = 1/4 mile
d_remaining = ?????
d_remaining =d - stop
d_remaining = 11/12 - 1/4
1/4 = 1*3 / 4*3 = 3/12 You are doing this so that 1/4 has the same denominator as 11/12
d_remaining = 11/12 - 3/12 = 8/12
Wyatt has 8/12 of a mile to go 8/12 = 2/3 of a mile to go
2/3 mile <<<<<==== Answer.

You could also do this as a decimal
11/12 = 11 divide by 12 = 0.91666666667
1/4 = 0.25
Remainder = 0.9166666667 - 0.25
Remainder = 0.6666666 which is 2/3
I have not been particularly careful about how many 6s you get. Just copy what your calculator says..
