you need to line them up to tell what place value each are in. if u don't the you won't known exactly what the product is equivalent to.

Answer: Why it makes sense: When we compare or order decimals we need to compare place values just like we do with whole numbers. When the edges are “jagged” it makes it harder to compare each decimal place. Adding a zero in an empty place value makes it easier to compare the numbers.
