Basically it gives more detial, while renaming a noun right beside a noun phrase.

An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that immediately follows another noun. It explains or defines the noun it follows and is usually set off by a comma. It makes sure you know what the writer is talking about. The writing trait improved are the Ideas – the message that the author wants to send. Descriptions make sure that the correct message is sent through.
