3 + 4x = 51
step 1: subtract 3 from both side
3 + 4x - 3 = 51 - 3
4x = 48
step 2: divide by 4 on both side
4x = 48
4x ÷ 4 = 48 ÷ 4
x = 12

Not sure what choices you are given but
3+4x=51
-3 -3
4x=48
divide by 4 to both sides
x=12
