Kiev was divided among Yaroslav’s five sons.
- According to Yaroslav's testament, he wanted to prevent a power rumble over Kiev among the five of his sons. He divided his empire among them and the four younger sons should obey their eldest namely, Izyaslav sought to prevent a power struggle among his five sons by dividing his empire among them and enjoining the younger four sons to obey the eldest, Izyaslav, the grand prince of Kiev. But unfortunately, this advice did not last long, Civil war still prevailed after Yaroslav's death.
