This system gives jobs or special privilege to those who support a candidate.

This political system works as an exchange with citizens providing support and working for a candidate to obtain a position in the government. In exchange for a win, the politician provides jobs or positions for their supporters. This system puts similar thinking people in control of government positions creating consistency but not allowing for dissent. It can also put weak or unqualified people in positions because they were owed, preventing highly qualified individuals from working in government positions. Jackson believed one of the powers of a politician is to hand out positions to those who supported them. Jackson had friends and associates in political positions even in an unofficial cabinet who advised Jackson as president referred to as the "kitchen cabinet".
