Why did the union victory strengthen the power of national government

A lot of states still considered themselves to be independent rather than part of the union of the united states, so they decided to boost the power of the central/federal government in order to prevent another rebellion

it prove that the federal government has a supremacy over state governments,authorizing its power to control the states.
