Hello there!

A number is added to 9. << Since we don't know the name of the number, we will call it x.

A number is added to 9 = x + 9

Then they say the result is then multiplied by 4 to give a new result of 120.

We need to turn this into an equation.

(x + 9) * 4 = 120

Use the distributive property

(x)(4) + (4)(9) = 120

4x + 36 = 120

Add 36 to both sides

4x + 36 - 36 = 120 - 36

4x = 84

x = 84/4

x = 21

Thus, the number is 21

I hope the details are clear to understand. If you don't understand something, please feel free to leave a comment down bellow...

As always, I am here to help!
